Equipmake HPI-800: 400 kW SiC Inverter

The Equipmake HPI-800 is a high-power inverter developed for electric powertrain applications requiring substantial current capacity and high switching frequencies. Engineered and manufactured in the UK, it combines up to 400 kW of maximum continuous output power with a mass of only 12.7 kg. Equipmake notes that maximum continuous power is dependent on the motor used with the inverter.

The HPI-800 operates across a 400–800 V DC supply range. It can provide a peak output current of 820 A RMS and continuous output current of 760 A RMS, giving it significantly greater current capability than lower-output inverter platforms.

Physically, the inverter measures 94 mm in height, 287 mm in width and 494 mm in length. These dimensions, combined with its relatively low mass, allow a substantial amount of electrical performance to be packaged within a compact unit.

A major characteristic of the HPI-800 is its use of Wolfspeed/Cree silicon carbide, or SiC, modules. Equipmake states that this technology enables switching frequencies of up to 40 kHz. The configurable switching range extends from 1 to 40 kHz, giving powertrain engineers flexibility when integrating the inverter with an electric motor and control system.

The inverter also incorporates a 600 µF internal DC bus capacitance with a ±10% tolerance and accepts a 9–32 V auxiliary supply. The datasheet specifies operation with an 800 V Vcc at elevations of up to 2,000 metres.

Page 2 of the product leaflet highlights four numbers that summarise the HPI-800 particularly well: 12.7 kg mass, 400 kW maximum continuous output power, 760 A RMS continuous current and switching frequencies reaching 40 kHz.

Together, these specifications position the HPI-800 as Equipmake’s high-power, high-current SiC inverter option for applications where electrical performance, switching capability and compact packaging are important system requirements.
