Equipmake HPI-900: Flexible 440 kW Inverter

The Equipmake HPI-900 is a high-performance inverter designed primarily for demanding commercial vehicle powertrains. Equipmake describes the unit as a cost-effective and flexible inverter, engineered and manufactured in the UK and developed particularly to power the HTM-3500 electric motor in bus and truck applications.

The HPI-900 operates from a DC supply between 400 and 800 V and delivers maximum continuous output power of 440 kW. Peak output current reaches 900 A RMS, while continuous output current is rated at 600 A RMS. Switching frequency can be configured between 1 and 20 kHz.

At 24 kg, the inverter measures 127 mm high, 561 mm wide and 365 mm long. It uses an internal DC bus capacitance specified at 1,200 µF with a ±10% tolerance and accepts an auxiliary supply between 9 and 32 V.

Communication with other vehicle systems is supported through CAN J1939 and J2284 protocols. These interfaces are particularly relevant to the HPI-900’s intended use in commercial vehicle systems, where communication between the propulsion system and other vehicle controllers is essential.

The HPI-900 is also designed with configuration flexibility in mind. Although primarily intended to work with Equipmake’s HTM-3500, the inverter can be configured to power two motors within an axle arrangement. Equipmake states that the product builds upon its ISO 26262 ASIL D ready inverter architecture.

The product summary on page 2 brings together the main performance figures: 440 kW maximum continuous power, 600 A RMS continuous current, switching frequencies up to 20 kHz and a 24 kg inverter mass.

For bus and truck electrification projects, the HPI-900 therefore provides a high-current inverter platform designed to integrate with powerful electric motors while supporting single- or dual-motor powertrain configurations.
