Equipmake HPI-450: 220 kW High-Performance Inverter

The Equipmake HPI-450 is a compact electric vehicle inverter engineered and manufactured in the UK. It is designed to provide high power density while supporting high-voltage electric powertrain applications. The inverter operates with a DC supply voltage between 400 and 800 V and provides maximum continuous output power of 220 kW.

At only 11.2 kg, the HPI-450 combines substantial electrical output with a relatively low inverter mass. Its enclosure measures 124 mm high, 310 mm wide and 255 mm long. Equipmake states a peak power density of 30 kW/kg, making power density one of the principal characteristics of the product.

The inverter delivers a peak output current of 450 A RMS and a continuous output current of 300 A RMS. Switching frequency can be configured between 1 and 20 kHz. The HPI-450 uses Semikron IGBT modules, with Equipmake specifically highlighting IGBT inverter technology as part of the product design.

Thermal management is handled through water cooling rather than an oil circuit. This simplifies the cooling approach while supporting the inverter’s demanding electrical operating requirements. The auxiliary electrical supply operates between 9 and 32 V, while the datasheet specifies an internal DC bus capacitance of 600 µF with a ±10% tolerance.

Functional safety is also incorporated into the platform. Equipmake describes the HPI-450 as ISO 26262 ASIL D ready, making functional-safety architecture an important part of the inverter’s design.
